Poor starting when left for 24 hrs or more takes 3-4 attempts to start it starts and dies if I open throttle a little it cough and splutters and then is OK if I use every day for work seems ok so don't think glow plugs thinking battery ? Did have alternator dieearlier in year and battery totally flat ?

Duff glow plugs would lead to long cranking times, but usually once the engine fires it should run normally.

I'd be checking the fuel pipework and seals in case you have an air leak in to the fuel supply

I would  pull the glow plug fuse and then start from cold. If it's the same then change the glow plugs. My 09 plate 1.8 tdci has had new battery,  this year March time new glow plugs then last month new alternator.  Mind it's done 99k.

If it smokes white after initial cold startup it's pointing to glow plugs if the battery is good.
