I just filled up my 1.8 mk2.5 for the first time, and the dash display claims 425 miles to empty.
Now that seems a bit low to me, especially as I could stretch my old 1.6 Mk2 petrol to 400 miles to a tank.

I did a quick comparison on Parkers website, and apparently it's an 11.6 gallon tank, and the book MPG is showing as 54 (I've heard of people getting 50 MPG out of their diesel too).

So 11.6 * 54 gives 626 miles.

While I appreciate it would be impossible to get the factory quoted figures, the car estimating 425 is a heck of a lot shy of 600+
.
Heck, even if I got 45 MPG it should be estimating around 520.

I'll be heading off down to Thorpe Park on Sunday, so will find out the actual MPG I'm getting on a run, but thought I'd see what real world figures you guys get.

I'd say find out your actual MPG before you start worrying too much ;)

The "actual" MPG I get from my 2.0 TDCi is in the low 40s for my "normal" commute etc but I've had nigh on 60MPG on a run from Essex to Wales (but just over 50MPG if I'm in a hurry ;) )

Factory figures are rarely obtainable, a lot of the time they are simulated with the engine out of the car attached to a computer in a laboratory

Also your calculations may be a little off.......

At a guess, the computer won't be working out based on a completely empty scenario, most cars will have about 2 gallons left when the low fuel light comes on so 425/9.6 = 44.27 which is likely to be a more realistic figure

I think when you fill up the computer works out the expected mileage from historical information.
If you go for a run where you will be getting more than the 36.6 mpg that it's showing, you might cover say 50 miles and the 425 mile range might have only dropped by 5 miles or so because the computer has reworked the expected mileage on the latest information.
It sounds complicated but you will see what I mean.

On my run to Thorpe Park and back (by the way, Stealth is amazing) I got 520 then the light came on, so another 50ish on that if I carried on.
The miles remaining seems to be based on the current average mpg.  When I filled up the average mpg was around 35, possibly from short runs to work, but I think I averaged around 45 on the run.

I've got just over 100 mile left showing on the trip computer with an average of 42.1MPG but my scangauge is showing 39.9MPG, the latter is more accurate.

Whilst only a small difference, when it comes to range calculations it would make over 20 miles difference.

MPG is down this week due to some pretty crappy traffic and it's generally taken me 10-15mins longer to get home everyday

I'm going to be lucky to get 400 from tank on my tdci sport, been looking at past mots and emissions been going up last 3yrs with last yr emissions being 1.3, guessing this not helping the mpg, and is an underlying issue.

I had a Terraclean on my 2003 1.8 TDCI a few months ago, just before the MOT and it didn't make any difference whatsoever. I must admit though that I am always putting additives into the fuel tank, Forte or Wynns injector cleaner etc. so the injectors and valves etc. might have been clean already.

I'm hoping my 56 plate 1.8 TDCI gets better MPG than my old Y Reg 1.8 TDDI.

In my old Mk1 i got 525 miles to a full tank before filling up. That was with the petrol light on and always filled about 48/49 litres worth of fuel.

Ran out of fuel once and put 50.54 litres back in.

So i'm hoping my new car gets at least 500 miles to a full tank!

TBH it's going to be more dependant on the types of journies and driving style

Just had a run to Scotland, 1St long trip since getting car, steady run doing low 60s mph, on filling up it worked out to 47mpg. Planning a full service and blank off egr at end of month so hopefully get bit more to gallon after that.
