Well, a couple of days later and it's working fine. Only had a very occasional blip when it didn't. DH car is fine too. Don't know what caused it - not been able to trace anyone/anything broadcasting a signal. Still not sure whether the £140 was needed or not now.

Thanks for all the replies. I have wireless broadband at home, but I've had that for ages (well before I got the car). It's only been a problem since last Thursday, so I think something, somewhere has changed in the vicinity of my house. It's really useful getting feedback on my post so thanks again. I'll let you know if I find anything out.

However, I have a problem and wondered if anyone has had anything similar. :( My remote on the car key packed up last week. Changed battery and it didn't fix it. So I keep setting the car alarm off everytime I open the door . Then on Friday DH had a problem with his remote on his car (Ford Mondeo) - co-incidence - maybe?! He set the alarm off on his car too.
