  1. Update time again and so far :D :D :D :D Seem to get 36mpg straight-off with normal driving. Will probably get a bit more if I really cruised along. This is on it's usual 10 mile journey that I used to get high 20's to low 30's mpg so it's defiantly improved. Going to have to find something else to moan about now !
  2. Not really used the car much since but it is going better. Not really looking at the mpg for now as I'm working in a different office. I was going to wait till next week when I'm back in my usual place and give it a fair test then. I'll keep you guys up to date :)
  3. Bit of an update... Filled the car up earlier and took it for a bit of a spin.... average mpg is currently sitting at 37.7mpg    That was one of my usual runs that I have been getting high 20's-low 30's mpg on so it's looking good so far. Here's a webpage I found the other day about the intake system and the swirl-flaps Duratec 1.8 Swirl-flaps Like I said before, just removed the plastic engine cover and just checked and made sure all the electrical connections were pushed together tight. On the 3rd page of the weblink above, The connections that I checked in
  4. Can't believe it....... Started the car earlier to go and see the olds and thought that sounds a bit different..... Louder..... Pulled out of the drive and onto the A road and couldn't believe it. The car is absolutely flying.... It's never gone like this from day 1 ! Where before I said it never seemed to want to rev, get to about 2,500rpm and it just seems to pick up and go now ! I now have some mid-range and top-end pull. It actually feels like it has 125bhp and not 70-80bhp ! Got so carried away by how well it was going that I never made it to the olds after ! The only thing I'
  5. Right....Had a bit of spare time on my hands today and spoke to the service manager of a big Ford garage not far from me. Basically explained the situation, how I drive the car etc. etc. and said that basically the car is doing 8-10mpg less than the brochure states and he agreed that it should be doing a few more mpg's than what it is. Normally any garage I have spoken to already wanted £££'s to put it on the diagnostics etc. but he said that seeing as that had already been done and that the ECU had already been updated that there was nothing else really that could be done as there were
  6. Hmmm... interesting. I've always had the feeling this engine doesn't like to be reved. It comes to something when the misses 53reg 1.6 8v Astra revs better than my Focus ! Starting to make me wonder if there is something wrong with mine. By chance, Did the induction kit make any difference ? ? Did it sound much louder ? ?
  7. Been thinking more about this..... What I have noticed is say your going up hill, you put your foot down more but the car doesn't really seem to pick up speed but if you start backing-off the throttle you can feel the car wanting to pull more for a second or 2. Something else I have noticed is that the idle doesn't always seem that smooth. Sometimes it trys to idle as low as 500rpm which is a right pain as it just feels like it's going to stall. It's not very often like this as the usual idle is about 650-700rpm when warm but it does dip every so often down to this 500rpm. I wouldn't eve
  8. I always take the trip computers figures with a pinch of salt but I've never been more than about 0.5mpg out whenever I work out the figures which is nearly every time I fill-up ! The 1.8l & 2.0l Duratec engines are the same but just that the 2.0l has a slightly bigger bore to get the extra capacity. If you look in the brochure, there's no difference in emissions or mpg between the 1.8l & 2.0l engines. Wish I had one of them ! I wonder if a remap would make it any better ? ? ? Anybody had one on the 1.8l engine ? ? ?
  9. Orangeboy.... Funny you should mention this about the Zetec engine Vs Duratec engine as I have been speaking to a neighbour about fuel consumption as he has a 1.8 Mk1 Focus estate and doing similar journeys in his car he's getting low 40's at least ! When I took my car in for it's 1st service, I asked to them to put it on the diagnostics and check to see if there were any problems or error codes and also update the ECU software (PCM module). All come back OK and they did update the software but it didn't seem to make any difference mpg wise. Surely as this engine is used in other Ford ca
  10. It's not driving technique I can assure you. Usually change gear at 2,700-3,000 rpm ish... Lower when it's cold even. I do coast up to junctions & downhill when I can. I don't floor it when accelerating. Not very often I give it a raggin ! My typical run to work is a 10 mile drive down an A road at a constant 50-60mph with only a stop and a left turn at the end of the journey so no traffic-jams or stop-starting of any kind. I only get about 33mpg typically with that. The same run in my old Focus ST170 I used to get 36mpg and that was a 2.0 litre engine with another 45bhp ! Even when
  11. Exactly matey.... about 10mpg under what it should be doing... If you think of it another way, it's doing about a quarter less than those figures suggest it should do  The more I think about it the more it makes me     I've got a mate at work with a Golf R32 - 4x4 with a 3.2 litre V6 and that does about the same mpg as my focus. My cousin has a Scooby WRX and again that is as near as damn it that same mpg. My old-man has a 2.0 Pug 306 XSI and he gets about 36mpg in that ! My old-man couldn't believe it so I took him out in it and showed hi
  12. Well just been away for the weekend to Weymouth.... managed to avaerage 38.2mpg acording to the car but actually managed 36.4mpg. Half motorway and half A-roads with me, the wife and our baby daughter plus a few bags. Not very impressed ! I think Ford & Mazda have a bit to learn with engines    Used to get more mpg out of my Focus ST170. That was a 2.0l and had 45bhp more !
  13. This has bugged the hell out of me since I got the car..... Tried this and worked a treat. Happy days ! !
  14. Another update for you all:- Took the car back to my local Ford dealer and they have updated the ECU with the latest release of software. Engine seems a bit smoother, especially idling as before it was trying to idle at about 600rpm which was a bit low. Now it's about 700-750rpm. Doesn't really seem to go any better but haven't really had chance to test it yet. I'll give it a few days then I'll fill the car up and start clocking the mpg. I'll keep you guys posted.
  15. Well bit of an update for you all... I asked this question about the trunking that goes into the airbox:- http://www.ffoc.co.uk/modules.php?name= ... 32#2547332 Well I seem to have picked up another 1-2 mpg by removing this trunking and the car seems to be going better as well..... almost happy days :D :D
