My Focus is a 1.6 Zetec Climate with the variable valve timing engine. My daily run is 65 miles to work and back, about a third on the M1. The fuel computer shows 45 to 46 MPG every week (I do drive gently, specifically for economy). The best I've had is 47 MPG and the worst 44 MPG. Mind you, when I check this by comparing miles travelled for fuel put in the tank it comes out nearer 42 MPG! The car is 12 months old with 18.000 on the clock.
