  1. just learned that my brother, who had a 2005 Focus 1.6lx (99bhp) has also had enough of his cars heavy fuel consumption, and went to his dealer and got rid of it in favour of a 4 month old diesel Mondeo (good choice). I've also talked to a few people who either had or knew someone who had a 1.6 petrol Focus (2005) and all said the car was a gas guzzler. Ford must now know that there is an inherent problem with the fuel consumption with this engine. It's a pity really, as this is a superb car let down (in petrol variants) by it's excessive fuel consumption. Long live the TDCI.
  2. Buy a fully-loaded petrol tanker to follow it! The 1.6Ti-vct engine is particularly thirsty ( as I discovered), and not very nippy. You'd be better off with a diesel engine if you can afford it, as its easier run and has more pulling power.
  3. Having experienced this diesel Focus and it,s overall performance I can say that its unlikely that I would buy a petrol car again. The Focus is a fantastic car, but it's no wonder that the Focus is the best selling diesel car in the country. Its overall blend of power and economy is hard to beat. I'm now getting 40mpg around town, and I'm sure more on the open road. I'd be interested to hear what others are getting.....(I've got a 2006 Focus 1.6Tdci 110bhp Sport)
  4. I posted the original thread on this topic back in February. I originally had a new 2005 1.6ti-vct Ghia but was averaging 25-29 mpg. Last month I traded it in (at a loss I'm sure) for an ex demo 1.6 tdci (110bhp) Sport with 3000 miles on the clock. I have to say I'm impressed straight away with fuel consumption....40mpg at least around town. Also this car has more ooomph!The 110bhp seems more powerful that my previous petrol 115bhp Ghia..I know that diesel engines have torque cut-in at lower revs, but the difference is unbelievable.   5. Of course you can get the 2.0tdci 136bhp with the new Focus, however it's not available on the Studio, LX, or Sport trims, only Zetec and above.
  6. Couldn't afford to keep throwing petrol into my 1.6ti-vct ghia so I got an ex-demo 1.6tdci 110bhp diesel sport today. Seems more powerful, faster and I'm sure a lot more economical than my old petrol car (29mpg). So far I like the car and reading on postings other people seem impressed by the economy of this engine.
  7. There are 3 engines 1.6 90bhp, 1.6 110bhp, and 1.8 115bhp, and I believe that they are only available on the 5-door and estate (not sure about the C-Max). I've just purchased today the 1.6 110bhp 5-door in Tango Red. It's an ex-demo with 3000 odd on the clock. Its a lovely car and compared to my trade in (2005 1.6 Ti-Vct petrol) seems a lot livelier, and I'm sure it will be far more economical as the petrol version was giving a disappointing 26-30 mpg.   8. has anyone noticed how flimsy the fuse box cover is? It's located under the glove box (you have to stoop down to see it) and it is a cheap piece of material held in place by two crappy yellow plastic plugs. Mine has come off several times just by accidentally brushing it with your feet. It got loose I believe by my need to replace a fuse and having to remove the cover in the first place...thus weakening the plugs original strength.It's annoying that in a car that I spent £13000 on has such cheap parts. I bet you wouldn't find this sort of problem in a Japanese car. Any others notice this? :o
  9. previously I have complained about my cars fuel consumption...2005 1.6Ti-Vct Ghia, which was averaging about 25mpg around town compared with the official figure of 32mpg. My dealer tried to explain it was the way I was driving etc. and I explained that I have driven various cars over 25 years and my driving habits have not changed. However I have noticed recently that I seem to be getting close to 30mpg which is more like it. I think my car, which now has 7000 on the clock, just needs more run-in.I hope it will improve. My first Focus 1999 lx 1.6 never got worse than 35 mpg and got up to 39mpg
  10. No this does not seem right although new engines are supposed to burn a bit of oil until they are run in. I have the same engine but do not have this problem (5500miles) My problem is heavy fuel consumption, 22mpg town driving...take it back to the dealer if the oil consumption does not improve.

Recently my son was removing his heavy schoolbag from the front passenger seat of my Ghia Focus and it got trapped in the plastic trim on the same side as his door.Two of the plastic retaining lugs on the inside of the trim came away from the metal seat frame, and although they push back into place, they now can be pulled out again with very little effort.(the lugs are part of the trim) The drivers side is more secure as there is a lever there to adjust the seat and this helps make it more secure. The plastic lugs are supposed to expand once they go through the metal holes in the seat frame,
  12. Has anyone noticed how flimsy the internal fuse box cover is? It's located on the passenger side above the footwell and well below the glove compartment. I once had to change a fuse, and ever since one of the two yellow plasticky screws that hold the cover in place keeps coming off if anyone just touches it with their feet. This seems a very cheap design and is definately not meant to last. I don't wanna have to take the car back to the dealer for such a minor item, but I would be obliged if someone out there has the same problem and found an easy solution ( as it's starting to annoy me!) :?
  13. Yep, your engine looks just like mine. I''ve got 2250 miles on the clock. At the 1500 mile check I told the dealer about this problem. He said that I had the latest engine management program and things should get better as it runs in, I hope so. But there must be a way (apart from the paperwork that comes with the car) of telling the two engines apart. I mean, if not, they could be giving the inferior engine and no-body would be any the wiser, but I doubt very much if Ford would do anything so underhand. BB :wink:
  14. I've got a 1.6 Ti-Vct Ghia, (113bhp) as oppossed to the "ordinary" 1.6 (99bhp), but how can you tell? Are there any distinguishing marks, or evidence under the bonnet? The reason I ask is...I chose this particular engine as it's supposed to be more powerful and economical than the 99bhp version. However it's very sluggish, and only returns 28mpg around town (Ford say 32 plus). My first MK1 1999 with an ordinary 1.6 engine returned 35-39 around town easily, and I don't drive any differently now. Surely Ford's engine technology should improve not get worse. I've noticed that if I switch the a/c on after being off for a while and sometimes vice-versa that you can smell a damp musty pong, which I presume is the moisture that the a/c traps in the condensor when it is on, and oozes out after being switched off for a while. Keeping the a/c on for a while should get rid of the smell. If not there are kits you can buy to freshen up the a/c unit and give it a nicer smell. :D
  16. :D Well, after just over one week of driving my brand new Focus Ghia 1.6TI-VCT, my reflections are these: absolutely great drive, steering precise, cornering exact,build quality first-class,a class above the Golf, and quiet as hell. Fuel consumption improving (did 500+miles on the first week), and I think accelaration improving as the new engine begins to loosen up. It's also a great-looking car, from every angle. Put water in the windscreen washer today, and on the inside of the filler lid it said " Volvo". I know Ford owns a share in Volvo/Mazda, and parts are made together, but is this nece

Yep......we don't need this evidence..all 2005 Focus owners know already that it's the best car on the road.Why pay £000s more for an under specced VW or whizzpopper....the Focus sold 4 million in it's last guise....thats proof enough thats its a very good car. However, overall this is an even better car.. I think a modern classic...take photos of your car..someday people will want to see pics of classics like this
  18. On Saturday past (16th July) I finally took delivery of my brand new Focus 1.6Ti-VCT Ghia, 5 door, finished in Tonic (light metallic blue), and boy what a car it is. It's a lot quieter than my trade-in....2002 Mondeo TDCi 130 bhp Zetec, but unfortunately it's not quite as powerful or fast as the Mondeo. One other little thing that annoys me is fuel consumption, averaging 29 mpg around town. However, I believe that the new engine is still "tight", and that after a few thousand miles when it loosens up it should be more economical and quicker pulling away.   19. Still looking for advice from regulars. Due to trade in my late 2002 Mondeo TDC1 (130bhp), for a new car, previously had a 1.6lx Focus....and now my lady wants a smaller car, i.e., the new Focus. Have in mind the following.....2.0 Zetec Climate , or 1.6 Ti-VCT Ghia or Titanium, all petrol.What do you think? Will miss the Mondeo's room, safety kit, power/speed, comfort, but I'm sure for being a smaller car, the new Focus can fill most of these voids. BB :o
  20. :lol: My first time here. I have a Sept. 2002 Mondeo Zetec TDCi 130 bhp, and my previous car was a 1.6lx Focus. Currently considering the new Focus..took one for a test..very nice. To keep with the power of my present car I was considering ordering a 2.0 Zetec Climate (petrol), but thinking that fuel consumption may be high I am now also considering either a Ghia or Titanium with the 1.6 Ti Vct engines. The options are available, but pricey. Any ideas? p.s. looked at a Mazda 3 today (based on the Focus chassis) and I was not impressed. Please reply BB
