  2. Just thought I'd come back and say well done to everyone who replied. The alternator was the component at fault. The garage fitted a new alternator and a new battery (since it had the wrong type of battery fitted!) and the car's working like a gem now. -T

Yeah, had both the battery warning light and the engine management light (which i presume would've come on because of the drop in voltage, I've read elsewhere on the CMax forum that there's a code for voltage drop?) I'd have thought the charging system would've kicked in when the booster battery was hitched up, but it didn't. Also I think it's the wrong type of battery fitted. The guy bought it from a SEAT dealership 18 months ago, and it broke down a few days after they got it so the SEAT dealership fitted a "new" battery. I say "new" as it was stamped with 2004 :roll: I'm pretty confident that the alternator is to blame, as it was noisy when the engine was running and there was a bit of a smell coming off it :lol: Anyway, we'll see what the garage make of it :) -T
  4. It's off to a local garage actually, another mate of my dad's. Though I did suggest to the chap who owns it that he may want to get the software on the ECU checked out to see if it needs updated. Was comical though, I had to drive it down to the garage with the backup battery in the passenger footwell and jumper cables passed out the passenger window and into the bonnet! And it cut out on me on the busiest roundabout in the town! Got to say, I was shocked at the driving of the CMax: it's all dashboard! It feels like you've got more car in front of you than behind you, it's really weird. Still, it's been handed over to a garage. I don't really wanna end up too involved in the computer wizardry on the CMax... -T
  5. Not at all mate, just wanted to check that was all! I take it the silver/calcium battery is slightly stronger than the normal lead-acid battery? i.e. it can stand higher current drains etc.? From what I'm reading, the CMax seems to have a high set of current drains based on stuff like dodgy headunits, and the dash and radio illumination staying on for some time after the car has been locked! -T
  6. peejay1977, Had you tried using some releasing oil on your old switch? That might free it away and you can keep hold of it as a spare. We use micro switches a lot at work on the buses and they're prone to sticking, a regular dose of WD-40 keeps them good though :) -T
  7. Well, my dad's decided to hand the job over to a garage, but like you say I'd expect they'll change the battery and alternator together. As a matter of fact, I'll suggest it anyway. Is it a silver-lead battery that the CMax requires. I'd read silver/calcium elsewhere on the forum...??? I'm away to print off the various threads I found that sound similar to the problem. -T
  8. To be honest, I put the EPB problem down to low voltage as well. I reckon a new battery might be required as well anyway, with this one being as discharged as it is, it'll never be the same again. Looks like a nice Christmas bill for someone then! :( -T
  9. OK, I've just been down at the stricken CMax. First thing I checked was battery voltage, and sure enough the battery's drained. It's showing only 9.3 volts. However, with the jump battery connected up it's a good 12.2 volts. The engine starts and runs fine with the jump battery connected, but the charge light doesn't go out and it's still showing 12.2 volts. Another thing coming up is a "limited EPB function" fault, though I put that down to the low voltage in the battery? Would I be right in assuming that this 28,000-mile motor's looking at needing a new alternator then? -T
  10. Thanks for these suggestions, will give them all a shot today. Jonesy, Yeah, I probably could leave the backup battery connected through the cigarette lighter while I recharge the original battery, that would work I suppose. The original battery will have to be removed from the car for charging though as the car's quite a distance away from the house :( I'll try leaving it running for a while anyway, and see what happens. I'll report back with any findings, though after speaking to my dad about what he's done to it so far, it'd appear the alternator may well be shot, as well as the battery being completely dead! -T
  11. Well, the keys the guy has supplied only has the standard Ford flip/remote key, and his house and work keys! So if that is the case, then we don't appear to have a key for it. Is it not possible that it's a standard fit alarm system? We think we may be able to overcome that by one of those clever devices that plugs into your cigarette lighter and is designed to keep power going to the radio so you don't lose the code. That may then make the alarm think the battery is still fitted while we change it over, but obviously neither of us is sure whether even that will work or not! I've been reading through various threads and so far everything points to the battery, seen a few people having problems with CMax's and fixing them with a new battery. But don't really wanna go throwing parts at it without any idea what's actually wrong! -T
  12. Hey all. My dad's appeared with an '04 plate Focus C-max Ghia that belongs to his workmate. The car is a 1.8 petrol. From what I'm told, the car was driving fine, then several warning lights came on and the car cut out. It now will not run under it's own steam. However, if the car is started with the help of a set of booster cables and another battery, it will start no problem at all. However, if the backup battery is disconnected, the car cuts out again. Obviously we assume this to be a fault with the car's current battery and we'd like to get it off to give it a good, slow overnight charge to see if that fixes it, and if not we'd fit a new battery. The trouble is this though... as soon as the car's battery is disconnected, the alarm goes off! Can anyone shed any light? Is this a problem on the petrol C-max's that has a simple fix, or has no-one come across it before? Obviously my dad and I are both thrown into this with our eyes closed, neither of us really know anything about the inner workings of the CMax so we don't really know where to start. Personally I've not even looked at it yet, though I plan to have a good look at it tomorrow. -T

  14. haha, wouldn't surprise me if it did! No, I don't particularly want it. I'd never buy a car from Thornwood VW as they are so overpriced. Just surprised they have one so relatively cheap on their forecourt! But, no. I can't afford it even if I would buy a car from them :lol: -T
  15. Newer, with less miles, and 400 less cc and less mpg. I know where I'd rather put my money, but then I do prefer a diesel So, basically, Thornwood VW have actually got a car on their forecourts that's actually cheap for what it is?! This must be a first... -T
  16. Hey all. I'll start by saying that I'm not even considering buying this car. However, the local VW dealership have it in. To me they've a reputation for over-pricing cars, but this one seems an unusually good deal! Just wondering if I'm right or not. It's a Focus 2.0TDCi Zetec Climate, it's done just under 44,000 miles. It's a "54" plate in Machine silver with 5-doors. £8990 seems a good price for what it is, or are they worth less than I think?? -T
  17. and whoever reckons owning a diesel is gay needs to wake up and smell the coffee! Diesel will take over the world. Diesels are coming on leaps and bounds, and already we're seeing diesels which can scare the life outta their petrol brothers. It's only a matter of time before a diesel engine becomes the natural choice for a performance flagship model for every car manufacturer! -T
  18. If you ask me, a TD version of the new ST is definitely something ford should consider. Even if it's just another "TDCi Sport" The TDCi Sport sold well and is popular for it's TDCi engine combined to ST170 looks. The Fiesta Zetec-S TDCis are as popular as the petrol versions, and as said above, the Mondey STTDCi sold well, so why not market a Focus STTDCi? The Volvo 5-cylinder petrol unit should be a good one, Volvo's are well known for racking up the miles without too much problems. A Diesel variant is a natural move, if you ask me. Look at things like the Fabia vRS, or the SEAT Ibiza Cupra TDi. Both sporty models, powered by a diesel. Popular as company cars because of their diesel engine, while still feeling like a sports model! So, yeah, come on Ford, please. For us diesel fans, PLEASE bring out a diesel ST! And why not stick to the Volvo routes of the current ST and fling in a Volvo diesel unit? (Sorry, but these things are quick, I watched a V70 D5 disappear in front of me. It hurt, but it wouldn't have done if the same engine was in a Focus STTD ;)) -T
  19. I love the new Focus! I think the shape is really nice. it's different from the current focus, but it's still evidently a focus. The boot is HUGE, a MAJOR improvement on the current Focus. It's nice enough to drive, and the interior, while not as radical as that in the MK1, is nice and everything is well laid out. The only complaints i had on my test drive were the switch stalks, the wimpy 1.6Ti-VCT petrol engine, and the price of the car! -T
  20. Must've been, the only 1.6 petrol in the new Focus is the Ti-VCT one! Only other petrol engines are a 1.4 16v and a 2.0 16v. Still think the diesels are gonna be the pick of the bunch! -T
  21. Well, my overall opinion on the 1.6? Rubbish. Well, OK, it is silent at idle, and it revs free enough out of gear. But out on the road, i didn't really like driving it at all. I don't know if it's because i'm a diesel man myself, or what, but i just didn't like the 1.6 engine. It was too underpowered, in my opinion. If you ask me, the only petrol worth going for will be the 2.0. The 1.4 will be SERIOUSLY underpowered. In my opinion, the diesels will be the better choice. I am biased, i'll admit that, but after sampling a 1.6, i reckon the petrol engines will struggle with the size of the car. I've not had to change down gear on a hill since i last drove my 1.1 Fiesta, and even it could pull up a hill in 4th where i needed to change down in the new focus. Engine aside, the car is a big improvement on the current one. The steering would take a bit of getting used to, but once there, it's gonna be one good car to drive. Despite it's huge lack of power, i did like driving the new car and I've been offered a test drive in a diesel version when the garage finally take delivery of one. My only other complaint about the new Focus? The price! (which I said already) -T
  22. Three O'Clock this afternoon, i'm getting a test drive in a 1.6Ti-VCT Ghia. I've heard that driving this car after a MK1 Diesel, it's hard to get used to. So We'll see how it goes with me. As far as I'm concerned though, it's a nice looking car. The interior is clever and nice looking with my only real complaint lying with the indicator and wiper stalks, which look rather hideous, and as Kev suggests, a bit VW. I like the idea of the automated wipers though, and i've heard they work rather well (the guy in the showroom was telling me he'd got the car overnight and they worked really well with him). My only other failing is the price. It's far too expensive. One thing i really like is the size of the boot. BIG improvement on the current hatchback! Dealers have a shortage of test cars though. My local dealer has only one car, and it was supposed to have four. Laidlaws in Edinburgh have, apparently, one third of the cars they were expecting. This is blamed on there only being one plant producing the cars, and there being tailbacks what with Christmas and everything... I'll let you all know how the test drive goes! -T
