I've answered in the ST forum but may as well post here too. LCR combined is 32mpg, ST is 30mpg. 20,000miles = £150-200 more per year. Plus with 320Nm @ 1,600rpm you'll be changing up earlier which will help. As will the 2,500rpm @ 70mph in 6th.

Have you looked at how much tax you'll be paying? High CO2 emissions meant that it would've been costing me £2400 a year in tax. The Astra VXR and Golf GTI would've actually been cheaper! I opted out, took the cash and bought my own.

I still can't see what people are on about - What makes the Golf so special? Remember, we're talking Hot Hatches here, 205 GTi, old Golf GTi, Lancia Delta integrale - how is the new GTi like that? The ST is so much more of a performance car IMHO - The GTi is cool but it's just too slow to be king of the hot hatches! I've had a Magnum Grey ST170 for three years now and fancied a change so I've ordered mine in Panther Black. As soon as I can I'll be getting the front fog and reverse light surrounds coloured black too!

The only problem with this plan is that's it's cheaper to just get the ST2 which comes with the 'choice' options already fitted, for less money than adding them to an ST1. Obviously there are a few options that aren't on the ST2/ST3, but loading up an ST1 just doesn't make any sense. I agree. If anything, stripping down an ST1 a la Clio Cup would be the order of the day.

Hmmm... A bit confusing. These two cars are basically the short list for my next purchase. Guess I'm gonna have to get some test drives and see for myself!
